In September 2021, Krysty was diagnosed with bone cancer osteosarcoma. She went through full chemotherapy treatment and several blood transfusions. In January 2022, she had surgery to remove and replace her femur bone and part of her knee with a titanium expandable prosthesis. Since the end of her treatment, she had four lung surgeries to remove multiple lung nodules. In August 2023 another lesion was detected this time in her scapula. Krysty is proceeding with 2nd line chemotherapy and considering high-dose radiation.
Despite all this painful journey, she remains a positive and happy child. She attends the school and participates in multiple activities including theater shows, where she played the main role of Jack in the Jack and the Giant Beanstalk in spring of 2023. Recently Krysty has been selected to be a Kid Captain on the historic Crossover to Kinnick event where the Iowa Women's Basketball team is going to break a record attendance at a women's basketball game.
