Connective Issue #39

This November, We are grateful for the dogs who are our partners in advancing osteosarcoma research. In honor of Pet Cancer Awareness Month this November, explore our Canine Clinical Trial Resource and consider submitting to the Discover Oncology Comparative Oncology Special Issue: Making It Better for Osteosarcoma. This month, we’re spotlighting the Carter family and their inspiring efforts to honor Scott Carter’s legacy through research, advocacy, and community. Be sure to save the date for Giving Tuesday on December 2, a day dedicated to giving back and supporting our mission. Help our OsteoWarriors feel the holiday magic—choose a gift from their Amazon List to Santa and send it by December 8. Together, we are Making It Better.

With hope,

OUR COMMUNITY

Spotlight on the Carter Family

The Carter family’s dedication to the osteosarcoma community began with Scott Carter’s dream to help fund cancer research. In his memory, the family established the Scott Carter Foundation, which has since raised millions to support pediatric cancer research. Their involvement has continued to grow—Luke now serves on MIB Agents’ Junior Advisory Board, participates in Climb the Hill, and leads the family’s new initiative, MilesCount, extending their impact even further. Together, they are helping drive progress and hope for families affected by osteosarcoma.

Canine Clinical Trials: Improving Outcomes for Dogs and Humans Alike

Bone cancer in dogs occurs far more frequently than in people, providing a critical opportunity to study the disease and identify new treatment strategies that benefit both species. The MIB Agents Canine Clinical Trials resource page features a list of veterinary oncology programs in the US and Canada, and ongoing osteosarcoma canine trials, with links to participating institutions and study details. Explore the page to learn how this research is driving progress for both dogs and humans with osteosarcoma.

RESEARCH

Submit to Special Comparative Oncology Issue: Make It Better

Discover Oncology is launching a special issue: Making It Better for Osteosarcoma: Translational Research, Comparative Oncology, and Beyond, edited by Alicia Viloria-Petit, MSc, PhD (Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph). Inspired by MIB Agents, this collection seeks studies that identify the key tools we still need to truly make it better for osteosarcoma patients.

Topics of interest include: translational and comparative oncology in canine and human osteosarcoma, integrative studies at the intersection of sociology, psychology, and oncology, and research that amplifies the voices of patients, families, and advocates. Together, these perspectives aim to advance outcomes and improve quality of life for all those affected by osteosarcoma.

Submission deadline: May 4, 2026
